Making a difference here and around the World
For information about any of these programs please contact Christy Herrscher.
Good Shepherd Habitat for Humanity - Help build a home along side the new homeowner in efforts to provide decent and affordable housing for low income families. No construction experience is required. Look for Good Shepherd’s build dates for 2008 to be announced in September.
Interfaith Housing Coalition - Interfaith is an organization that helps the homeless by offering ninety to twelve month programs that provide furnished apartments, job counseling, budget training, and life skills training. Good Shepherd offers support to this organization through a monthly work day on their property. Some typical work includes painting, landscaping, sorting and organizing donations, and getting apartments ready for new families to move into. There will be something for everyone to do regardless of age or skill set.
Upcoming work days:
April 19th, May 17th, June 14th, July 12th, and August 9th.
Operation Christmas Child - Pack a shoebox and provide a needy child in a troubled country a Christmas gift. Each year Good Shepherd supports Operation Christmas Child through donations from the church to be sent to needy children. This gift is a simple shoebox that can be filled with school supplies, hygiene items, toys, books, etc.
North Dallas Shared Ministries - The goal of NDSM is to provide appropriate, effective, emergency assistance, both tangible and intangible to low-income clients and patients; to help these persons assume responsibility for their lives to the degree they are able; and to access them to entitlement, health, and community programs designed to help them achieve stability for the long term. You can help by volunteering in the following areas: food pantry, computer assistance, job counseling, client interviewer, clothes closet, ESL teacher, translator, physician, nurse, clinic. Contact Jerry Fowler if interested in volunteering.
Meals On Wheels - Teams of faithful volunteers deliver hot meals to the needy and homebound. The time commitment is small and extra delivery help is always needed. The Visiting Nurses Association prepares and provides the meals. Contact Kris Krystinik if interested in volunteering.
Tutoring at Withers Elementary - You can help a neighborhood child by offering your time as a tutor at Withers Elementary, right around the corner from our church. Contact Dianne Dahlander if interested in signing up to do this rewarding work.
Honduras Mission trip - Yearly opportunities for parish volunteers to assist the people of Honduras with Christian education, construction projects, and medical/dental healthcare needs. The trip is usually in late February or early March and lasts one week. Adults 21 and older are invited to join. The team is the guest of the Diocese of Honduras and our host is Bishop Lloyd Allen. The mission team members are responsible for funding their travel and hotel expenses which usually runs around 1,000.00. You can be a part of this ministry by going to Honduras, being a part of the home team through prayer and service, or providing financial support for supplies and equipment. Contact Christy or Rick Herrscher for further information.
