Bishop Joseph Harte, Suffragan Bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, invited several families from the northwest Dallas area to his home to discuss plans for an Episcopal mission to serve the rapidly developing region between Northwest Highway, Valley View Lane, Denton Drive and Preston Road. Five families met with him; and of those five, three agreed to join in the new undertaking.
A newly graduated deacon, The Rev. Glendon C. Coppick, was assigned by the diocese to serve as vicar to the mission. Rev. Coppick and his wife, Shirley, moved into a small guest house on Castle Hill Farm at Marsh and Royal Lanes, and the missionary work began from there. Rev. Coppick became a familiar figure in the neighborhood calling on potential parishioners and encouraging them to become workers and members in this mission.
The first mission meeting was held at Castle Hill Farm with seven present. Application was made to the Diocese for mission status, and a Mission Vestry was appointed by the Bishop.
Arrangements were made to rent the large assembly room at Bette Hoffman Nursery School on Midway Road for Sunday services. Three graduate engineers designed and built an altar. Soon we had an attractive altar that also provided storage deep inside for the folding chairs, cushions, hymnals, and prayer books. A steamer trunk served as the sacristy for the altar appointments.
July 10, 1955 The first service was held with Bishop Harte celebrating Holy Communion. Forty seven people were present. In a few weeks' time ... what an achievement! The year 2005 marks the 50th anniversary of Good Shepherd. In those 50 years, we have grown to a parish of 1200 communicants and a parish day school of 600 students.
